processing
I liked doing the comparison between pre- and post-processed photos in one of my other posts a little while ago, so I thought this week I would do a few more sets with commentary.

So, obviously the big one here was cropping. The original photo was taken wide-angle in a moving boat, so it was difficult to frame the shot level and also to keep the boat out of the shot. Knowing I could crop it down later to compensate for the bad framing, I took the shot anyway. By cropping the bottom half of the shot out I was able to save the photo and turn a tourist-y looking picture (look at me, I'm in a boat!) into a decent horizon shot with a cool sky (thanks, barrel distortion!).

Editing helped me turn a fairly boring shot (bad exposure was a big part of it, and having the wrong lens on at the time was another) into one of my favorite pictures to date. I wasn't well equipped to do this shot when it occurred since I had a fairly wide lens on, and through an unfortunate mistake I got the exposure and white balance all wrong. Some magic in editing helped crop down to the right framing (moving it from a horizontal to vertical framing in the process), and color adjustment let me fix the exposure. I'm really happy with how it came out in the end, though the original shot was fairly crappy.

The editing on this one was a little more subtle, but incredibly important. The original shot has good framing and color that I only changed slightly, but the orange dots were killer. For something like this to work, the shot really needed to be very plain and clear with just blue and black - the orange dots threw off the simplicity and color. Editing them out was a huge pain in certain places of the shot, but well worth it.
Well, hopefully this has been at least somewhat interesting. It's always fun for me to look back at the before and after to see how a bad picture can turn out with a little bit of cleanup work!
